The New York Rangers on Saturday waived defenseman Wade Redden, who signed a six-year, with the team two years ago.

They announced the decision during the morning skate prior to Saturday night’s preseason game at New Jersey.

Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather said the move, which removes Redden’s reported $6.5 million salary cap hit and gets the Rangers under the cap, will give younger players an opportunity to make the roster.

"I told him at the end of last year that if he didn't have a great camp this was going to happen," Sather said of Redden.

If Redden clears waivers, he can be sent to the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Rangers’ website reported that Redden said he will take a few days to think his situation over before deciding whether to accept the potential assignment to Hartford or try to find a job elsewhere.
