Kirk Maltby skated with some of his Red Wings' teammates Wednesday morning at Joe Louis Arena, then signed a one-year, two-way contract to remain with the organization that he has played with for 13 of 16 NHL seasons.

The 37-year-old veteran forward has played 908 regular-season games with the Red Wings and won four Stanley Cup championships. Maltby, who was an unrestricted free agent this summer, will likely have to clear waivers to be assigned to the club's AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

Maltby will head up to Traverse City, the site of the Red Wings' four-day training camp next week in northern Michigan. While he'll compete for a roster spot with the Wings, it's more likely that he'll begin the upcoming season in Grand Rapids, which is about a three-hour drive from Detroit.
