Thrashers sign Fredrik Modin

The Atlanta Thrashers announced Monday that they have signed unrestricted free agent forward Fredrik Modin. No terms of the deal were disclosed.

"I know Fredrik well from our time in Tampa, and he is an experienced and talented veteran who is tremendously respected in the locker room," General Manager Rick Dudley said in announcing the signing. "He's won a Stanley Cup, along with an Olympic gold medal, and possesses that winning mentality we are looking for."

Modin, 35, had 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 44 games while splitting time between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings last season. The 6-foor-4, 220-pound left wing tallied points in back-to-back games on two occasions, which included a three-point stretch (2 goals, 1 assist) from March 6 to March 8 after being acquired by Los Angeles. Modin also added 3 goals and an assist in six playoff games with the Kings.

The Sundsvall, Sweden, native has 225 goals and 227 assists in 858 NHL regular-season games during his 13 seasons with Toronto, Tampa Bay, Columbus and Los Angeles. Modin scored a career-high 32 goals during the 2000-01 season and topped the 30-goal mark for the second time in his career in 2005-06. He has 14 goals and 12 assists in 57 career playoff games, including 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in 23 games while helping the Lightning capture the 2004 Stanley Cup.

Modin has represented Sweden in international competition seven times, including the World Junior Championships, World Championships, World Cup of Hockey and the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he helped his native country win the gold medal in Torino, Italy. Modin also earned a silver medal at the 1994 World Junior Championships, a gold at the 1998 World Championships and a bronze at the 2001 World Championships.
