Isles buy out defenseman Brendan Witt

The New York Islanders have  officially bought out the contract of defenseman Brendan Witt after putting him on waivers.

The Isles announced the move Sunday via Twitter.

Witt had one year remaining on a three-year deal. The 35-year-old defenseman has been with the Islanders since 2006-07, but was waived late last season and finished with the Islanders’ AHL farm team in Bridgeport.

Witt has been a defensive defenseman throughout his career, which began with Washington in 1995 – two years after the Caps made him their first-round choice (No. 11) in the 1993 Entry Draft. He remained with the Capitals until being dealt to Nashville at the trade deadline in 2006.

Witt has 25 goals and 121 points with 1,424 penalty minutes in 890 regular-season games. He’s never had more than 3 goals or 14 points in a season. He has 4 goals and 1 assist with 44 PIM in 41 playoff games.
