Coburn back with Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman Braydon Coburn.

A restricted free agent, Coburn has signed a two-year, $6.4 million deal.

The 25-year-old Coburn had 19 points in 81 games last season, and played a key role on the team's power-play and penalty-killing units, mostly playing alongside Kimmo Timonen.

Re-signing Coburn, as well as their trade for Tampa Bay blueliner Andrej Meszaros, bolsters a blue line that already includes Chris Pronger, Timonen and Matt Carle and propelled them to the Stanley Cup Final.

It also will make the job of whoever ends up in the Flyers' net far easier. The team re-signed Michael Leighton, last season's starter, to a two-year contract Wednesday, keeping him off the open market, but they also reportedly are looking at other goaltenders. They had received permission earlier in the week to speak with Evgeni Nabokov and Marty Turco, and could still be looking at other options.

They already have last year's backup, Brian Boucher, signed for another season, and also inked Johan Backlund, their third goalie in the playoffs, to a new two-year deal a week after the season ended.
