Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo was taken to a Chicago area hospital Sunday night after taking a shot to the midsection of his body while killing a penalty in the final seconds of the first period.

Salo stayed down on the ice for a few minutes before he was helped from the ice. He was later taken to Northwestern Hospital for evaluation.

Fellow blueliner Shane O'Brien also left the game in the second period after being cut by the stick blade of Blackhawks forward Dustin Byfuglien, who was following through on a shot attempt and was not penalized. O'Brien was bleeding profusely from the forehead as he left the ice.

O'Brien returned to the game later in the period after receiving stitches.
