Penguins-Rangers gets Monday night started

The defending Stanley Cup champions visit Manhattan as part of a three-game Monday night schedule in the NHL.

Sidney Crosby leads the Pittsburgh Penguins into Madison Square Garden for a 7 p.m. ET start against the New York Rangers, a game that will be nationally televised in the U.S. by Versus.

It’s the second straight day the Penguins will be in the spotlight, as they come off a 2-1 victory in Philadelphia in NBC’s Game of the Week. Pittsburgh’s power-play unit, near the bottom of the League, came through with a pair of goals on the man advantage to get the two points. Sergei Gonchar scored the first one and set up Matt Cooke’s game-winner with 1:47 remaining.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are coming off consecutive shutout defeats on the road after scoring 14 goals in wins over the Canadiens and Lightning at MSG. Montreal got its revenge Saturday night, blitzing New York 6-0 at the Bell Centre.

There are a pair of later games on the schedule. The Calgary Flames look to end a six-game losing streak when they host the St. Louis Blues at 9:30 p.m. The Vancouver Canucks, fresh off a 5-1 win over the Blackhawks in which goalie Roberto Luongo made 43 saves, welcome in the Northeast Division-leading Buffalo Sabres for a 10 p.m. start.
