Mercier rifled a shot past starting Hamilton netminder Cedrick Desjardins at 4:43 to open the scoring in the first period.
Lake Erie took a 2-0 lead at 5:40 of the final frame when Matthew Ford took a pass from Patrick Bordeleau then wristed shot that beat Desjardins over the blocker.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to one at 17:49 of the third period when P.K. Subban carried the puck end-to-end and dished to J.T. Wyman, who beat Weiman with a shot between the legs.
Mercier added his second goal of the game at 19:14, intercepting the puck in the neutral zone before sending a shot into the open net to give the Monsters a 3-1 lead.
Ben Maxwell redirected a Mathieu Carle shot from the point in the dying seconds, but it was too late as Hamilton could not tie the game.
