Devils sign free-agent defenseman Cory Murphy

The New Jersey Devils have signed free-agent defenseman Cory Murphy to a two-way contract on Friday.

Murphy, 31, started last season with Florida, injured his shoulder, was sent to the Panthers' AHL affiliate in Rochester and was claimed by Tampa Bay off re-entry waivers. He  finished the season with 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 32 NHL games. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defenseman also had 2 goal and 4 assists for 6 points in 5 AHL games.

The native of Kanata, Ontario, spent played four seasons at Colgate University and six seasons in Europe before joining the Panthers in 2007. In 79 NHL games with Florida and Tampa Bay, he has 7 goals and 26 assists.
