Not much went right for Thrashers in '07-08

Advantage Margin -38

The Thrashers actually had 20 more power-play chances on the road than at home (168 to 148 — most teams get more extra-man opportunities at home). Their 316 power-play chances were the third-fewest in the NHL — more than only division rivals Tampa Bay and Florida.

Even-Strength Goals Margin -39

The Thrashers were next-to-last (behind only Tampa Bay) in total goals allowed. They also managed only 142 goals at even strength — 34 of them by Ilya Kovalchuk.

Special Teams Goal Margin -20

Atlanta had a lot of problems killing penalties on the road, allowing 45 man-advantage goals in its 41 games away from Philips Arena. The Thrashers were 29th in penalty-killing away from home.   

Goals by defensemen 13           

No team got less offense out of its back line than the Thrashers. Rookie Tobias Enstrom (5-33-38) was the only blueliner to generate anything on the attack — meaning that there’s likely a job to be had for No. 3 draft pick Zach Bogosian.

The Thrashers got half of their points from games that were tied at the end of regulation time. They were especially good at home, with a 4-1 record in OT and a 6-2 mark in shootouts.

It’s hard to win when you’re playing from behind, and no team in the East spotted the opposition a lead more often than the Thrashers, who scored first fewer times than any team except Anaheim and Los Angeles.       

Best '07-08 Number 18-6-8

Atlanta’s record in one-goal games, including overtime and shootouts. The Thrashers were just 16-34 in games decided by more than one goal.

Worst 07-08 Number 33.9           

Shots per game by opponents, the most in the NHL. The Thrashers also had the worst shot differential in the League, taking only 25.8 per game — a difference of 8.1.
   
Scheduling

The Thrashers get a chance to get off to a good start with four of their first five games at home. They also have their last three at Philips Arena. Atlanta also escapes any lengthy road trips — the Thrashers have no trip longer than a four-game, one-week trip to the West Coast in February.
