Franzen out for Game 2

Detroit forward Johan Franzen, the top goal-scorer in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, didn’t dress for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against Dallas on Saturday night due to concussion-like symptoms.

The Wings announced that Franzen would be scratched prior to the pre-game skate. They said he will not play until further testing and evaluation is completed. He will remain in Detroit to undergo testing on Monday, when Game 3 is scheduled to be played in Dallas.

Franzen leads all scorers with 12 goals in 11 games during the playoffs, and is tied for second with 15 points. His 12th goal, a deflection late in the first period, proved to be the winner in Game 1 against Dallas.

Franzen has 27 goals in his last 27 games since March 2. He has scored in each of the Wings’ last five playoff games, matching a record held by Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay.

In the previous round, he broke a longstanding Howe record for most goals in a four-game series by scoring nine in a sweep of Colorado — setting an NHL record for the most goals in a four-game series.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland said Franzen has had headaches — which he described as "nothing significant" — since playing the Avalanche earlier this month, and they haven't subsided.

"We don't know if he's had a concussion," Holland said. "We're hoping to find out more after he goes through various tests this weekend and sees a specialist on Monday."
