• The only U.S.-born player selected in the first round of the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, McColgan played his first full season with Kelowna in 2009-10 joining fellow California-born teammates: Colin Long (Santa Ana), Mitchell Callahan (Whittier) and Adam Brown (Yorba Linda). Prior to joining the WHL, McColgan played for the Los Angeles Junior Kings organization.

• He was runner-up to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for the WHL Rookie of the Year Award after finishing tied for second in rookie scoring with 69 points.
