DraftKings daily fantasy value picks for Jan. 17

Sunday, 01.17.2016 / 11:04 AM | Eric Goodman  - NHL.com Fantasy Staff Writer

Each day during the 2015-16 season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.

Players accumulate points in DraftKings for each goal (3 points), assist (2), shot on goal (0.5), blocked shot (0.5) and shootout goal (0.2). Bonuses are given for shorthanded points (1) and hat tricks (1.5). Goalies accumulate points for each win (3) and save (0.2), and lose a point for each goal allowed. Goalie bonuses are given for a shutout (2) where the goalie completes the entire game with no goals allowed in regulation (and overtime, if applicable). Shootout goals will not prevent a shutout, and goalies will receive points for any goals or assists they score in a game. Penalty minutes, hits, plus-minus and PP points DO NOT count in DraftKings. DraftKings lineups must include nine players (2 C, 3 W, 2 D, 1 G, 1 FLEX) and fit within the $50,000 salary cap.

Frans Nielsen, C, New York Islanders

DraftKings price: $5,400

Nielsen is in the midst of a four-game scoreless streak after registering at least a point in four previous games but should still be a good pick at home against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. The second-line center has seven points (two goals, five assists) and 12 shots on goal in seven career games against Vancouver. DraftKings owners should select Nielsen with full confidence; he has eight power-play points, including a team-leading four power-play goals, through 44 games this season.

Justin Williams, W, Washington Capitals

DraftKings price: $4,900

While the prices on players in DraftKings have changed recently to reflect respective increased fantasy value, Williams continues to fly under the radar. The second-line forward should provide fantastic value when the Capitals host the New York Rangers. He has six points (three goals, three assists) and 13 SOG in three games against the Rangers this season. Williams has also been great against the Rangers throughout his career with 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) and 76 SOG in 31 games.

Andrei Markov, D, Montreal Canadiens

DraftKings price: $4,300

There are many strategies to employ when assembling a DraftKings lineup and a popular one is selecting value-priced defensemen that play on their respective team's top unit at regular strength and the power play. Markov remains a high-potential, buy-low candidate when the Canadiens face the Chicago Blackhawks on the road as he brings added value with 16 (two goals, 14 assists) of his 23 points this season in 23 away games.

Petr Mrazek, G, Detroit Red Wings

DraftKings price: $7,500

Mrazek is set to play his first game against the Flyers on Sunday, so DraftKings owners are entering into unchartered territory. Given that there are 11 more expensive goaltenders in the player pool, Mrazek is likely to provide a sound return on investment. The Czech goaltender is in the midst of a five-game winning streak with 146 saves on 153 shots and a 1.38 goals-against average.
