DraftKings daily fantasy value picks for Jan. 13

Wednesday, 01.13.2016 / 11:46 AM | Eric Goodman  - NHL.com Fantasy Staff Writer

Each day during the 2015-16 season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.

Players accumulate points in DraftKings for each goal (3 points), assist (2), shot on goal (0.5), blocked shot (0.5) and shootout goal (0.2). Bonuses are given for shorthanded points (1) and hat tricks (1.5). Goalies accumulate points for each win (3) and save (0.2), and lose a point for each goal allowed. Goalie bonuses are given for a shutout (2) where the goalie completes the entire game with no goals allowed in regulation (and overtime, if applicable). Shootout goals will not prevent a shutout, and goalies will receive points for any goals or assists they score in a game. Penalty minutes, hits, plus-minus and PP points DO NOT count in DraftKings. DraftKings lineups must include nine players (2 C, 3 W, 2 D, 1 G, 1 FLEX) and fit within the $50,000 salary cap.

Nazem Kadri, C, Toronto Maple Leafs

DraftKings price: $5,500

Kadri should bring a lot of value to DraftKings owners on a four-game Wednesday. The second-line center leads the Maple Leafs with 141 shots on goal through 40 games and is always a viable threat to get some points skating with first-time all-star Leo Komarov, who leads Toronto with 15 goals. Kadri will try to keep his recent strong play going when the Maple Leafs face the Columbus Blue Jackets; he has 13 points (five goals, eight assists), 10 blocked shots and 44 SOG in his past 14 games.

Reilly Smith, W, Florida Panthers

DraftKings price: $4,400

The Panthers' record 12-game winning streak ended with a 3-2 overtime loss at the Vancouver Canucks on Monday but they have a favorable matchup Wednesday at the Calgary Flames. Smith had an assist Monday, and also has a goal and five SOG in his past three games. The third-line forward scored on Nov. 10 in a 4-3 win against the Flames, who are 29th in the NHL with a 3.12 goals-against average through 41 games.

Sami Vatanen, D, Anaheim Ducks

DraftKings price: $4,800

It's important for owners to select lower-priced players with high upside given the limited pool Wednesday, and Vatanen should provide a great return on investment at home against the Ottawa Senators. The Ducks' top defenseman on the power play has been solid at Honda Center this season with 14 (three goals, 11 assists) of his 20 total points coming in 22 home games.

John Gibson, G, Anaheim Ducks

DraftKings price: $6,900

Gibson has been warming up with a 5-2-0 record, including two shutouts and a 1.75 goals-against average, in his past seven starts. The 22 year-old leads the League with a 1.84 GAA through 18 games, and is 0-1-0 with a 2.06 GAA in one game against Ottawa. Owners need to stay on top of the morning skate reports to see who coach Bruce Boudreau goes with as his starting goaltender, but Frederik Andersen ($6,800) should also be a sound selection with a win and one goal against in one start against the Senators.
