Obama calls Blackhawks with congratulations

President Barack Obama called the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday with his congratulations for winning the Stanley Cup.

The president spoke to coach Joel Quenneville, owner Rocky Wirtz and captain Jonathan Toews, praising them for their leadership.

"The President added that he looks forward to welcoming the team back to the White House to celebrate their victory," the Blackhawks said.

On Tuesday, the president sent a congratulatory message from his personal Twitter account, @POTUS.

"Congrats to my hometown @NHLBlackhawks on 3 titles in 6 years -- we'll see you and The Cup at the White House," Obama wrote.

It will be the third White House celebration for Obama and the Blackhawks, who also were honored following their Cup wins in 2010 and 2013.

The Blackhawks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday to win the best-of-7 series. It was the first time the Blackhawks clinched the Final in Chicago since 1938.
