Fantasy Spin: Dubnyk, Ortio worth a look in net

Much has been made of goalie Devan Dubnyk's fantasy impact after his trade to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. In his first start, he did not disappoint.

Dubnyk, whose fantasy ownership increased to 28 percent in Yahoo leagues, had a favorable start against the offensively challenged Buffalo Sabres and made 18 saves for his second shutout of the season, a 7-0 victory. He is 10-5-2 with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Even when Niklas Backstrom (32 percent owned) and Darcy Kuemper (54 percent owned) are healthy, Dubnyk is the better option for Minnesota and has the superior numbers. The Wild have a favorable upcoming schedule with home games against the Arizona Coyotes and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Minnesota also has three games with the Edmonton Oilers remaining. While with the Coyotes, Dubnyk defeated his former team three times this season.

-- If you missed out on Dubnyk, here's another option: Calgary Flames goalie Joni Ortio.

Ortio (5 percent owned) won his second game in as many starts, 4-1 against the Coyotes. He made 27 saves after his 36-save shutout against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

Flames starter Jonas Hiller (69 percent owned) allowed six goals in his most recent start, a 6-5 loss to the Florida Panthers on Jan. 9. Regular backup Karri Ramo (16 percent owned) has been dealing with an upper-body injury and allowed at least three goals in four of his past five starts.

Flames coach Bob Hartley tends to go with the hot hand in net, which is Ortio. Calgary visits the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks, not ideal matchups for any goalie, but then plays the Sabres, Wild and Oilers at home.

-- Calgary forward Mikael Backlund (6 percent owned, C) is making up for lost time.

Since missing 29 games with an abdominal injury, Backlund has scored in four straight, including against the Coyotes. Backlund has four goals and six points in four games skating on the second line and the first power-play unit.

-- Good news for owners of Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak (18 percent owned, RW): He's staying.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Thursday after the first period of a 3-0 win against the New York Rangers that Pastrnak would not be sent to Providence of the American Hockey League.

The 18-year-old has shown he can score at the NHL level and could be a good find for those in need of goals. Pastrnak played 15:12 (including 2:20 on the power play) and had one shot on goal Thursday.

-- Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane has always had injury issues, but when he's healthy he's a fantasy owner's dream, producing in many categories.

Kane (71 percent owned, LW) who missed five games after sustaining a lower-body injury, scored in a 2-1 win against the Dallas Stars and has a goal in three straight games, including one on the power play and one shorthanded. He's taken 13 shots and has six penalty minutes. If he's available, he is a must add. It helps that Winnipeg has averaged almost four goals per game in its past six.
