Fantasy Spin: Canadiens power play gets going

The Montreal Canadiens had lost two games in a row and their power play had one goal in the past seven games (1-for-21). After a slow start Wednesday, the Canadiens scored three power-play goals to rally for a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Montreal was 0-for-4 on the power play entering the third period before scoring three man-advantage goals in a 3:53 span to pull out the victory. Max Pacioretty had two of the goals, and P.K. Subban the other. Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher, Tomas Plekanec, Sergei Gonchar and Andrei Markov made up a power-play unit that clicked.

Markov (72 percent owned in Yahoo leagues, D) played 4:28 on the power play and had two power-play assists. He has five goals, and 11 of his 22 points have come on the power play. Gonchar (3 percent owned, D) also had a power-play assist in 4:08 of 5-on-4 ice time. He has six points in his past eight games, and his production could increase if he gets more power-play time. More than half of Gonchar's career points have come on the power play.

Pacioretty had played on the top line with Gallagher (28 percent owned, RW) and Galchenyuk (50 percent owned, C, LW), but Plekanec (46 percent owned, C) was moved up to that line and Galchenyuk dropped down to the third line. Those three couldn't do anything at even strength, but obviously clicked when together on the power play. Plekanec, Gallagher and Galchenyuk each had an assist.

"Power play was big topic this week," Pacioretty said. "We talked about in the media. We talked about it in the room."

Pacioretty and Subban are owned in virtually all Yahoo leagues, but the other Canadiens mentioned above are there for the taking.

- Philadelphia Flyers goalie Rob Zepp (3 percent owned) made 25 saves in a 1-0 loss to the Washington Capitals. He's allowed four goals on 50 shots in consecutive starts since being recalled from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Sunday. Zepp will likely be the go-to guy with Steve Mason expected to be out for two weeks with a lower-body injury.

- The New Jersey Devils scored five goals against the Los Angeles Kings in a 5-3 win, and 11 Devils got on the scoresheet. Forward Mike Cammalleri (35 percent owned, C, LW) had a goal and an assist. He has three goals in his past six games after going seven games without a point. Scott Gomez (2 percent owned, C) had two assists. He has seven points in six games this month, matching his total from December (15 games).

Steve Bernier (less than 1 percent owned, RW), who usually is on the fourth line, had two goals playing with Gomez and Adam Henrique on the top line. He had 10 points in 29 games before Wednesday. Gomez has increased the fantasy value of those he has played with because of his ability to create plays and set up his linemates.
