Detroit Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss has undergone successful surgery to repair a sports hernia, the team announced Monday, and is expected to return after the Olympic break.

Weiss, who last played Dec. 10, has two goals and four points in 26 games this season, his first with the Red Wings.

"The doctors are calling it a core muscle injury," general manager Ken Holland said. "The doctor said 6-8 weeks, but with the Olympic break we're shooting for him to play right after the Olympics.

"I guess he had a fairly significant tear but surgery went well. We had other players in the past here have that same surgery [Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom]. They seemed to come back in good shape."
