U.S. stretches lead to 3-0 after two periods

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The United States used more strong special-teams play to increase their lead against Canada to 3-0 after two periods here at Herb Brooks Arena.

Quentin Shore scored the period's only goal. With the Americans killing a penalty, Shore chased defenseman Derrick Pouliot deep into the Canadian zone, stripped him of the puck and rocketed a shot under the crossbar at 13:57.

The Americans' penalty-killing continued to dominate the Canadians' power play, killing off three more shorthanded situations.

Helping preserve the lead was goaltender Jon Gillies, who made arguably the best save of the camp with 7:29 left in the second. Mathew Dumba fired a low shot from above the circles that was redirected in front. Gillies was falling down and back, but managed to shoot his glove up and snag the shot as it was fluttering over his head.

It was one of the 10 saves Gillies had in the second; he has 20 for the game.

After two periods, Canada is outshooting the U.S. 20-12.
