LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- A fast-paced first period saw Matthew Finn score the only goal of the opening 20 minutes to give Canada a 1-0 lead after one period.

Curtis Lazar fished a puck out of traffic and sent it back to Finn, who pinched down into the left circle and scored at 7:35.

To preserve the lead Canada had to survive a Sweden 5-on-3 play for 1:40 after Derrick Pouliot was called for shooting the puck over the glass at 17:12 and Darnell Nurse followed him into the penalty box after being called for boarding.

Things got chippy in the final seconds of the period as a scrum in front of the Sweden net nearly ended in fisticuffs. Sweden's Anton Lindholm and Canada's Emile Poirier were sent off for roughing to end the encounter.

Back with more after the second period.
