Reinhart, Gauthier give Canada lead against Finland

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Goals from Sam Reinhart and Frederik Gauthier in a 27-second span gave Canada a 2-1 lead after one period against Finland.

Finland took a 1-0 lead on their first shot when Henri Ikonen fed a pass from below the goal line to Kasper Kapanen alone in front, and the top 2014 NHL Draft prospect didn't miss, beating Canada goalie Eric Comrie 51 seconds into the game.

Canada evened the game when Reinhart, potentially the top pick in the 2014 draft, showcased his offensive skills. He skated the puck around the Finland zone, lost it, got it back, spun and fired a rocket of a shot that beat Finland goalie Juuse Saros at 10:11.

On the next shift, Gauthier crashed the crease to bang in a loose puck at 10:38 to give Canada the 2-1 lead. Hunter Shinkaruk and Anthony Mantha were credited with assists.

Canada committed three penalties in the period, but goalie Eric Comrie and the team's penalty killers were up to the challenge. Finland's best chance came on its first man-advantage, when Comrie had to sprawl to make two saves on Ikonen from right in front.

Comrie, in his first game action since Jan. 9 -- the Winnipeg Jets prospect had season-ending hip surgery in February -- stopped 12 of 13 shots. Saros, a Nashville Predators draft pick, made eight saves on 10 shots.
