Veteran defenseman Martinek rejoins Islanders

On the first day of training camp, the New York Islanders announced that they have signed veteran defenseman Radek Martinek to a one-year deal.

Martinek, 36, played for Columbus last season but made only seven appearances due to injury.

He is a draft choice of the Islanders (No. 228 in 1999), who played the first 453 games of his career with the team before joining Columbus. He has also appeared in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with the Islanders.

He has 22 goals and 82 assists for 104 points in his NHL career.

Martinek played in four games with Ceske Budejovice of the Czech league during the lockout.

He is one of nine defenseman on the team's training camp roster.

On Sunday, the team also announced eight call-ups to training camp.

Casey Cizikas, Travis Hamonic, Jon Landry, Colin McDonald, David Ullstrom and Ty Wishart have been recalled from loan from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. The Islanders also officially recalled two players from the Canadian Hockey League, Griffin Reinhart from the Edmonton Oil Kings (Western Hockey League) and Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs (Ontario Hockey League). Reinhart was their top pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, while Strome was their first-round pick in 2011.

The Islanders now have 26 players in camp -- 15 forwards, nine defenseman and two goalies.
