Smoskovitz named OHL player of the week

The first-year Mississauga Steelheads earned their first bit of award-winning notoriety as center Dylan Smoskovitz was named Ontario Hockey League Player of the Week on Monday.

The 19-year-old forward helped the Steelheads sweep their three games last week as he totaled five goals, two assists and a plus-5 rating.

Smoskovitz started his week with a power-play goal to open the scoring Monday against the Brampton Battalion, and then he set up the game-winning goal with just 31 seconds left in regulation, helping his team to a 4-3 victory. On Friday he scored Mississauga's first two goals in a 3-2 win against the Ottawa 67s, and closed his week Saturday with a pair of goals and an assist in a 4-3 win at the Erie Otters.

Smoskovitz leads the Steelheads in goals and points (10).

Smoskovitz isn't the only 2013 NHL Draft prospect to have big weekends. Here is how a few others represented themselves:

* Guelph Storm left wing Tyler Bertuzzi, rated a B skater by NHL Central Scouting in its preliminary ranking of players to watch, scored his first two goals of the season in a 6-3 loss to Erie on Friday.

* Bertuzzi's teammates, defenseman Zachary Leslie and left wing Jason Dickinson, had solid outings in the Storm's 7-6 overtime win against the Peterborough Petes. Dickinson, an A-rated skater, had a pair of assists, including the primary assist on the game-winning goal. Leslie, a 5-11.75, 168-pound blueliner, had four assists in the win, including the secondary assist on the winning goal.

* Belleville Bulls goalie Charlie Graham had the perfect start to his season -- a 30-save shutout in a 2-0 win at Brampton on Friday in his first game of 2012-13.

* Owen Sound center Cameron Brace had a pair of goals, an assist, a plus-3 rating and opened the shootout with a goal in the Attack's 5-4 shootout win against Peterborough on Saturday.

* London Knights forward Bo Horvat had a pair of two-goal games over the weekend. Rated as an A skater by Central Skating, the 6-foot, 200-pounder scored the Knights' first two goals in a 4-1 win against the Plymouth Whalers on Friday, and scored twice more Saturday in a 5-3 loss at the Oshawa Generals. In the game against Oshawa, Horvat's teammate, Max Domi, had a pair of assists. Domi also is rated an A skater.

* On the other side of that Oshawa-London game, the Generals' Cole Cassels had a goal and two assists in the 5-3 Oshawa victory. The B-rated skater is the son of former NHL forward Andrew Cassels.

* Windsor left wing Kerby Rychel had a pair of goals and an assist in the Spitfires' 4-3 shootout loss to the Niagara IceDogs on Sunday. Rychel, an A-rated skater, is tied for the team lead with five goals.

* Ottawa defenseman Taylor Fielding rallied the 67s from a 2-0 deficit Sunday with the tying and go-ahead goal en route to a 6-2 win against the Kitchener Rangers. He was a plus-3 Sunday, and leads the team with a plus-10 rating.
