At the Rink: Devils at Kings

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Kings goalie Martin Jones did his part to earn another start, and it comes just in time to give goalie Jonathan Quick a rest.

Jones will make consecutive starts for the second time this season when the Kings play the New Jersey Devils at Staples Center on Wednesday. He was first off the ice after the morning skate.

Jones had a 19-save shutout Monday in a 2-0 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs, after he had allowed 10 goals on 36 shots in his previous two games. Kings coach Darryl Sutter dismissed the notion of Jones bouncing back and referenced managing his goalies to the All-Star break.

"We need both our goalies to win games," Sutter said. "We're giving Quick here another chance to get at least six or more days between games, and you need your other goalie to win games. It's not bounce back. They either win or you lose. If we had won the other night, then Quick would play tonight. It's not somebody ahead of the other."

Jones is the fastest goalie in modern-day NHL history (since 1967-68) to have seven shutouts; it came in his 29th game. Steve Mason had reached the mark in 32 games. The Kings won't play again until Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks, so Quick will have had six days off between games.

New Jersey is without leading scorer right wing Jaromir Jagr, who has the flu. But Sutter was generous with his praise of the Devils, who will make their second appearance at Staples Center since the 2012 Stanley Cup Final.

"If you look at it, they have outstanding goaltending," Sutter said. "Both guys have really good save percentages and really good goals-against. That's a huge part of good teams' games and obviously their experience up front. They've got a lot of guys with big numbers, historically, and still have that skill set. They're still making plays. They still hang to the puck in traffic. That's the biggest thing I've seen, just knowing the experience of them."

Devils forward Patrik Elias' next goal will be his 400th.

Goalie Cory Schneider is expected to play. He is 3-1-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .962 save percentage in four games against the Kings.
