At the Rink: Flames at Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS -- Rookie forward Josh Jooris made a good impression during Calgary Flames training camp but it wasn’t enough to earn a spot on the roster at the beginning of the 2014-15 season.

But with forward David Jones (lower body) going on injured reserve, Jooris was promoted Thursday from Adirondack of the American Hockey League and will make his NHL debut Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"I told him just bring back the buzz and the energy you had in training camp," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "That ruffled our eyes. I told him, 'Just think you're playing street hockey and mom and dad are watching you from the living room [Friday]. Just keep it simple.'"

Jooris' parents and sister are making the six-hour drive from Burlington, Ontario, to see the game.

"This is what I've been dreaming about since I was a kid," Jooris said. "You always picture yourself in the NHL. You idolize the guys in this dressing room and the guys going against you."

Jooris, 24, signed a free agent contract with the Flames in July 2013 after three seasons at Union College. He played 73 games for Flames' AHL team last season.

"I'm excited to get that first shift out of the way and hopefully it will fall into place from there," he said.

Hartley had Jooris on a line with Jiri Hudler and Sean Monahan at the morning skate but the Flames have had some players dealing with injuries and the flu, so the lineup is in flux.

"There's a few game-time decisions," Hartley said. "It's rare that we go that way but we have two players who are iffy."

The Blue Jackets were humbled Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars after feeling pretty good about themselves following wins against the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers. Dallas started strong and took a two-goal lead in the opening eight minutes. Columbus rallied to tie but then the Stars scored twice in the third period.

"We had a slow start," Columbus rookie forward Michael Chaput said. "It was too little too late. That's a big thing for us, to start showing up for 60 minutes."

Columbus will make a lineup change for the first time this season; Corey Tropp will replace injured rookie forward Marko Dano. Tropp will be on the fourth line with Chaput at center and Jared Boll on the right side.

"I'm looking for Corey to bring some energy," Columbus coach Todd Richards said.

Tropp had two goals and eight assists in 44 games for Columbus last season after being acquired on waivers from the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 28, 2013. He also led the Blue Jackets with a plus-11 rating but was a healthy scratch the first three games this season.

"You're always frustrated but at the same time you've got to continue to work hard to get back in the lineup," he said. "You've got to be a good teammate and support all the guys."
