Penguins top pick Kapanen returned to Finnish team

Kasperi Kapanen, the Pittsburgh Penguins first-round pick (No. 22) at the 2014 NHL Draft, was returned to his team in Finland on Thursday.

Kapanen, No. 39 on the NHL.com Top 60 prospect ranking, will play for KalPa in Liiga, Finland's top professional league. He had seven goals and seven assists in 47 games last season with KalPa, and one of his linemates was his father, former NHL forward Sami Kapanen.

The Penguins also announced forward Beau Bennett has been placed on injured reserve. Bennett sustained a lower-body injury during practice Sept. 27 and the Penguins reported at the time he was expected to miss six weeks.

Pittsburgh also recalled forwards Zach Sill and Andrew Ebbett and defenseman Taylor Chorney from Wheeling of the ECHL.

The Penguins open their season Thursday at home against the Anaheim Ducks.
