Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is scheduled to play in his first preseason game Wednesday when the Penguins play the Detroit Red Wings (7:30 p.m. ET, NHLN-US). The Penguins announced their lineup on their website early Wednesday.

It will be Crosby's first game since the Penguins were eliminated by the New York Rangers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Second Round.

Crosby missed time early in training camp with an undisclosed injury unrelated to the right wrist issues he had treatment for during the summer. He had been expected to play Monday against the Minnesota Wild but was pulled from the lineup to attend the funeral of his grandmother.

The game against the Red Wings is the Penguins' final one of the preseason. They open the regular season Oct. 9 at home against the Anaheim Ducks.

"Ideally you'd get at least a couple [of games], but that's the scenario, so I'm not going to complain," Crosby said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "That's the way it is. I'm going to try to make the most of this game and get ready for the season."

According to the newspaper, Crosby will center a line with Chris Kunitz and Patric Hornqvist.

"Having [Crosby] in … gives us that punch up front that we need," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said, according to the Post-Gazette. "Having a player like that who can break free, who can make that special play, is important."
