Flyers' Giroux out with lower-body injury

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux will miss approximately two weeks with a lower-body injury sustained Friday, general manager Ron Hextall said.

Giroux left the ice about 15 minutes into the team's first practice of training camp.

"We don't want to start camp like that but what are you going to do?" Hextall said. "We'll battle through and be the best we can be."

FANTASY HOCKEY ANALYSIS

The 2014-15 NHL season is drawing closer by the day, so NHL.com has you covered with all the fantasy hockey advice you'll need come draft day.

That time frame would keep Giroux out of the Flyers' eight preseason games, the first of which will be played Sept. 22 against the Toronto Maple Leafs (in London, Ontario) and Washington Capitals. They open the regular season Oct. 8 at the Boston Bruins.

Hextall said there had been no issues for Giroux prior to Friday.

"First day of camp and guys go 100 mph and things happen," Hextall said.

Giroux started the session centering the team's top line, between left wing Brayden Schenn and right wing Jakub Voracek. Giroux was replaced in that spot by Darroll Powe.

With Giroux out, Schenn could move back to center, but how the rest of the forwards lines look now remains to be seen. On Friday Sean Couturier centered Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds, Vincent Lecavalier was between Michael Raffl and R.J. Umberger and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare was between Zac Rinaldo and Jason Akeson.

"That's up to the coach, but we'll discuss it," Hextall told CSNPhilly.com. "There's going to be different line combinations probably tried throughout training camp and preseason, so we'll see. We'll see how that goes."

The Flyers' leading scorer in 2013-14 with 86 points in 82 games, Giroux was also a Hart Trophy finalist for the first time in his career.

Giroux also missed part of training camp last season recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his right index finger.
