Bruins open camp without Krug, Smith

Restricted free agents Torey Krug and Reilly Smith were not on hand Thursday when the Boston Bruins opened training camp at TD Garden.

"Won't comment on negotiations," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told the Bruins website. "We want them in our mix. As it's been chronicled, we've never had that type of player not signed and not come to camp."

Krug's 40 points last season tied for the lead among Bruins defensemen and his 14 goals were second. Smith, acquired by the Bruins from the Dallas Stars on July 4, 2013, had 20 goals and 51 points in his first full NHL season.

The Bruins begin on-ice sessions Friday at Ristuccia Arena and open the regular season Oct. 8 against the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden.

"You know, in an ideal world; to have all of your players healthy and present, that would be ideal," Chiarelli said. "Younger players, older players, if they miss time, they're going to fall behind."
