MacLellan embraces top role for Capitals at Combine

TORONTO -- In his role as assistant general manager of the Washington Capitals for the previous seven seasons, Brian MacLellan was part of the club's annual amateur scouting meetings and draft preparation, but it wasn't one of his main jobs.

Now that he's become the Capitals' general manager, he's gone from observer to the final authority.

"You have more responsibility to accept than [in] the previous position," MacLellan told NHL.com. "I think we have a good staff so I think the transition should be pretty smooth. It should work out well."

MacLellan was promoted from assistant GM to the top spot May 26, replacing George McPhee. In his previous role, his main duty was overseeing the professional scouting staff. Now, though, he has to take a more active role in amateur scouting.

"I've been around the meetings all the time, just the participation has been more from an observer's point of view rather than a participant," MacLellan said. "I know the system and process that we have and we'll just carry on the same way we have."

How much will that process change with someone new at the head of the table?

"They might be slightly different," MacLellan said. "He [McPhee] looked at players a certain way. I have a certain way. Me and Ross [Mahoney, director of amateur scouting] will come to a consensus opinion on what we're looking for."
