Alex Gillies, a "C"-rated prospect on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary players to watch list for 2014 NHL Draft prospects from the Canadian junior leagues, scored the game-winning goal early in the third period Monday to send Canada West to a 4-3 victory against Switzerland on the opening day of preliminary-round action in the 2013 World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Dylan Hollman, who was named player of the game for Canada West, scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period to give his team a 3-2 lead. Switzerland squared the game 3-3 in the second on a goal by left wing Matteo Romanenghi.

Gillies then scored the game-winner 1:07 into the third. The Michigan Tech University commit plays for the Salmon Arm SilverBacks in the British Columbia Hockey League. Nicholas Jones, also considered a "C"-rated prospect for the 2014 draft, scored in the victory. Jones, who stars for the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, is committed to Ohio State University in 2014-15.

In the other game Monday, Maxim Tretiak, grandson of Russian goalie icon and Hockey Hall of Fame member Vladislav Tretiak, made 26 saves to lead Russia to a 6-2 victory against Canada East.

Canada East opened a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Mike Panowyk and Charles Guevremont, a "C"-rated prospect from Saint-Jerome Pantheres of the Quebec Junior AAA League.

The Russians then scored six unanswered goals, including three on the power play, to earn the victory. Kirill Pilipenko had a goal and two assists for Russia and teammate Vladislav Kamenev, a "B"-rated prospect on Central Scouting's preliminary list of players to watch from Russian junior leagues, had three assists.

The tournament resumes Tuesday with two games at Mariners Centre in Yarmouth -- Russia plays the United States and Canada West meets Czech Republic.
