Canadiens' confidence never waned during series

TAMPA -- Montreal Canadiens coach Michel Therrien was asked prior to Game 3 here, having lost the first two games of the Eastern Conference Second Round series at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning, whether having two days off helped him make the necessary adjustments to turn the series around.

"Honestly, we don’t have that many adjustments to make," Therrien said.

When the Canadiens went on to lose Game 3 later that night 2-1 on a last-second goal by Tyler Johnson to go down 3-0 in the best-of-7 series, the quote resonated back in Montreal as a kiss of death.

Lightning's Callahan out of hospital after surgery

TAMPA -- Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan was released from the hospital Tuesday but will not play in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round series against the Montreal Canadiens (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Callahan had an emergency appendectomy Monday and is out indefinitely. He did not practice Monday, was admitted to Tampa General Hospital that night and was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

"I found out when it happened [Monday], a little after dinner I think," Cooper said Tuesday. "He had discomfort. We had to check him in and just like that we had to get him under the knife. He's good; we got to it before anything really bad could have happened."

Canadiens' Therrien sees pressure rising for Lightning

BRANDON, Fla. -- The Montreal Canadiens trail the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in their best-of-7 Eastern Conference Second Round series, but they aren't giving off the impression of a team on the brink of elimination.

Canadiens coach Michel Therrien on Monday said the Lightning are feeling the pressure heading into Game 6 at Amalie Arena on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) because they don’t have the experience in these situations. Game 7, if needed, would be Thursday.

"For sure there is more pressure on them," Therrien said. "We've been there. And the longer it goes the more they will feel that pressure. We were there in the first round and the fourth one is the toughest one because you are facing a team that's really desperate. And on our side we feel good to play in those types of games. Look at our record over the past two years when we've had our backs against the wall."

Lightning's Cooper not interested in playing a Game 7

BRANDON, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper does not want to answer questions about another Game 7 until he has to.

The Eastern Conference Second Round series between the Lightning and the Montreal Canadiens is heading to Game 6 at Amalie Arena on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports); the Lightning lead the best-of-7 series 3-2.

"Right now there's no Game 7 in our plans," Cooper said. "We want to knock this team out in Game 6 at home."

Lightning hope to roll Game 5 positives into Game 6

The Tampa Bay Lightning will look to build off of a better effort in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Second Round when they try to close out the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6 at Amalie Arena on Tuesday.

The Lightning were able to put more pressure on Canadiens goalie Carey Price on Saturday and Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

However, the Canadiens got a good bounce when Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau scored the game-winning goal at 15:53 of the third period off a shot that hit the crossbar and went past Lightning goalie Ben Bishop and into the net. Tampa Bay lost 2-1 but leads the best-of-7 series 3-2.

"I still like our position," Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman said Sunday. "I'd rather be up 3-2 than down. And we're coming home now. It's going to be a tough game but they have all been tough games."

Bishop plans to answer Subban with play in Game 5

MONTREAL -- Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop will be looking to bounce back and eliminate the Montreal Canadiens from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference Second Round series at Bell Centre on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; CBC, TVA Sports, NBCSN).

Bishop gave up three goals on 14 shots and was pulled from the Lightning's 6-2 loss in Game 4, which cut their lead in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference series to 3-1 on Thursday.

After the game, Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said Bishop "sort of was sitting on a horseshoe for a little bit there. He's played well, but he's been lucky as well. I think seeing him pulled out of the net is a confidence booster for our team."

Bishop wasn't in the mood to get into a back and forth with Subban on Saturday.

"You're always going to have a little bit of luck here and there. I'll take it, though," Bishop said.

Canadiens defenseman Beaulieu could play in Game 5

BROSSARD, Quebec -- Montreal Canadiens defenseman Nathan Beaulieu will be a game-time decision for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Second Round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Bell Centre on Saturday.

Montreal coach Michel Therrien said that Beaulieu has been cleared to return from an upper-body injury that has sidelined him for the past seven games.

"Yes, he's ready to play," Therrien said. "He's 100 percent and we'll let you know if he's going to be in the lineup."

Beaulieu has not played since Game 3 of the Canadiens' first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. He had one assist in three games, all Montreal wins, which won the series in six games.

Lightning put loss behind them, regroup for Game 5

TAMPA -- There are not many good things the Tampa Bay Lightning can take from a 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Second Round on Thursday.

However, the Lightning can take solace in the fact they didn't play a good game but are up 3-1 in the best-of-7 series with Game 5 at Bell Centre on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

"We got the beating we deserved [Thursday]," defenseman Anton Stralman said Friday. "You want to do things right and we haven't been doing that over the last couple of games."

Canadiens invigorated by blowout win in Game 4

TAMPA -- The Montreal Canadiens don't look like a team one loss away from elimination in the Eastern Conference Second Round and their confidence continues to rise after a 6-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 4 at Amalie Arena on Thursday.

One of the reasons for the Canadiens' optimism is they clearly outplayed the Lightning in two games here. Montreal outshot Tampa Bay 71-43 and controlled the puck during 5-on-5 play.

"Our focus has been to get another game at the Bell Centre," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said Friday before returning to Montreal. "Now we want to get back to Tampa Bay and have another game here. We are still taking this one game at a time. Momentum can change quickly in hockey."

Game 5 of the best-of-7 series will be at Bell Centre on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Lightning need to avoid sitting back again in Game 4

TAMPA -- Tampa Bay Lightning coach John Cooper said they went into a prevent defense against the Montreal Canadiens for much of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round after taking the lead on Alex Killorn's goal in the first period.

Evan after a 2-1 win, Cooper knows they can't do that again Thursday in Game 4 (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) if they want to sweep the best-of-7 series.

"It was a weird game because I thought we played well to get the lead and then sat back for the next 48 minutes or so," Cooper said Thursday. "Once they tied the score, the game settled down again. Do I like that our guys found a way to win? Sure. But you don't want to rely on that. We want to play a full 60 minutes [Thursday]."
