Chelios: Players should police themselves

TORONTO -- Chris Chelios looked over in Brendan Shanahan's direction as he was answering a question that had to do with his thoughts on the game as it is played now as opposed to when he was in his prime.

"Because of the era I was in, I just think everybody is too sensitive," Chelios said, peering over at a smiling Shanahan midway through the Fan Forum at the Hall of Fame on Saturday. "I ask my kids all the time what they think of the game and they love it, but for me it's tough playing in the era I did. For me, the players should control what happens on the ice."

And then Chelios hit Shanahan, who runs the NHL's Department of Player Safety as a Senior Vice President, with this:

"I think Shanny is too involved," he said.

Chelios reflects on bout with Hextall

TORONTO -- Fans of the Philadelphia Flyers likely haven't forgotten when goalie Ron Hextall attacked Chris Chelios, then with the Montreal Canadiens, near the end of Game 6 of the 1989 Wales Conference Final.

The Flyers were losing 4-2 and about to be eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs when Hextall went after Chelios as a matter of revenge for Chelios' high hit in Game 1 that left Brian Propp bleeding from the back of his head. Hextall got to Chelios along the wall and pummeled him with several blows. Once they were up, Hextall threw a piece of his equipment at Chelios, who was escorted off the ice.

The incident sparked a line brawl.

WATCH: Hall of Fame inductees receive rings

This year's class of inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame -- Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer, Brendan Shanahan, Geraldine Heaney and Fred Shero -- were presented with their rings Friday in Toronto.

During the presentation, each recalled where they were when they found out they would be honored.

"My 10-year-old son Jack was just coming home about 10 minutes later, from camp, and he was the first person that I told," Shanahan said. "And I choked up as I was getting the words out, that 'Daddy's in the Hall of Fame.'"

The induction ceremony will be held Monday.

Could Chelios return to play with sons?

Chris Chelios retired from the NHL in 2010, but could he be considering a comeback?

Chelios, 51, told reporters in Toronto that he would consider playing in Europe if his sons play hockey overseas.

His sons Dean, 24, and Jake, 22, play for the hockey team at Michigan State University.

"My guys are seniors in college now, and if for some crazy [reason] they don't make it [to the NHL], which, realistically there's just not enough jobs, I wouldn't hesitate," Chelios said. "I'm staying in shape to go to Europe, pick a good country and take my whole family over there and go play with them there. Like Switzerland. I've been there. Who knows? We've done crazier things in our family."
