NBA outing helped Rangers' third line find chemistry

NEW YORK -- With the New York Rangers running four lines for much of the past month, it seems like a different trio has provided a key goal every game. But during their current three-game winning streak, it's been impossible to miss the team's third line of Derick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello and Benoit Pouliot.

The line has combined for 10 points in the past three games, including two game-tying and two game-winning goals. It's an impressive run for a line that has managed to develop great chemistry on the ice as well as off.

"I think everyone just works hard," Zuccarello said after the team's practice Tuesday. "We're all capable of doing everything, working hard, taking the body, backcheck, forecheck. I think we just read off each other really well. We have four good lines, so there's not a lot of pressure. There's pressure on every line, but it's not like we have more pressure than the other ones. That's a strength to our team lately."

Maurice sees Jets responding to success

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice has 10 games under his belt since taking over Jan. 12. The Jets' 8-2-0 mark ties the best 10-game stretch in franchise history.

As a result the Jets have gone from the far edges of the Stanley Cup Playoff chase to just four points behind the eighth-place Vancouver Canucks. Mauricehas managed to get the most out of his new team without an overhaul.

"In the games toward the end when the coach is in trouble, you can see it in the players' body language," Maurice said. "But here they were going, they were trying. They just needed a little adjustment, a little refocus. There were a lot of good things in the Winnipeg Jets' game and we tried to keep those."

Bruins anticipate desperation from Canucks

BOSTON -- When the Vancouver Canucks visit the Boston Bruins on Tuesday at TD Garden, they will be hungry for a victory after losing their past four games in regulation.

The Bruins, who have won five of their past six, will be ready for a team with everything to lose.

"A team that's a desperate team is always a challenge," Bruins forward Chris Kelly said after the morning skate. "And we know that they're going to play desperate hockey. Whenever you lose four games in a row, and the expectations are extremely high like they are for that team, they're going to come out with their best game and we need to be ready for that."

The Canucks did not hold a morning skate. They flew in late Monday after a 2-0 road loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

Here are the projected lineups for both teams:

Capitals not taking Islanders lightly in division battle

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Within the confines of the Metropolitan Division space is at a premium.

Just four points separate second place from seventh place and the Washington Capitals, currently in sixth place, have not done themselves any favors recently.

The Capitals are winless in six straight intra-divisional games (0-5-1), their longest such streak since November 2007 when they failed to earn a win in seven straight games (0-6-1) against Southeast Division opponents.

Washington's next opportunity to earn its first Metropolitan Division victory since Dec. 27 comes Tuesday against the New York Islanders (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN2) who, despite entering the game in last place in the division and on a five-game winless streak, are by no means out of the Stanley Cup Playoff race in the Eastern Conference.

Harrold in for Devils, Giguere in net for Avalanche

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils defenseman Peter Harrold will return to the lineup for the first time in almost two months Monday when his team hosts the Colorado Avalanche at Prudential Center.

Harrold has been out since Dec. 7 when he slid into the goal post during a 4-3 overtime victory against the New York Rangers. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov, who sustained a lower-body injury in the second period of an overtime loss against the Nashville Predators on Friday, will not be in the lineup for the Devils.

Harrold, who missed 25 games with a non-displaced right foot fracture, was activated from injured reserve Monday morning.

Tortorella apologizes, returns to coach Canucks

John Tortorella will be back behind the bench Monday to coach the Vancouver Canucks against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena after a 15-day suspension that saw him miss six games. The team went 2-4-0 in his absence and is 0-1-0 on its five-game road trip following a 4-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

"I apologize first and foremost to the players, to the organization and to the League. It hasn't been a great two weeks," Tortorella told reporters Monday morning. "I didn't help matters for this team and we're in a tough spot right now. It's up to me to do my job and get this team back."

With a precarious hold on a playoff spot, Tortorella and the Canucks have a lot of work to do. Vancouver has lost three straight games and four of its past five, and has allowed 17 goals in its past four games. The coach's message delivered to the media was the need for tougher skin.

"We had meetings this morning. We have a long list of things we need to improve at," Tortorella said. "We need to start over on the mental side. We're off the rails on a lot of different aspects. Every aspect of our game is off. This team can and will play the right way."

Sharks hoping to solve Flyers' Mason

SAN JOSE -- The San Jose Sharks will try to snap out of their goal-scoring slump Monday against the Philadelphia Flyers and red-hot goaltender Steve Mason.

The Sharks ended a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 2-1 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks, but they've scored two goals in regulation in their past four games and have been shut out twice.

Mason has shutouts in two of his past three games, making 33 saves in a 5-0 victory Jan. 28 against the Detroit Red Wings and 35 saves in a 2-0 win Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

"Every night's a good challenge obviously, but when goalies are playing well and feeling strong, getting a couple shutouts, you got to put a little extra emphasis in getting in front and getting those shots through and making sure life's a little bit harder for him to find those pucks in traffic," Sharks forward Patrick Marleau said.

Ducks defenseman Vatanen back in lineup

The Anaheim Ducks recalled defenseman Sami Vatanen from the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League on Monday and he's expected to be in the lineup, paired with veteran Bryan Allen, for the Ducks' game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Honda Center.

Vatanen has six goals and 14 points in 39 NHL games.

Coming out of the lineup will be Luca Sbisa and Mark Fistric, the latter of whom sustained a lower-body injury Saturday against the Dallas Stars and was placed on injured reserve.

Frederik Andersen, who has won 14 of his first 16 NHL decisions, will get the start in goal.

He'll be opposed by the Blue Jackets' Sergei Bobrovsky, who has won his past two starts and nine of 11 since returning from injury.

Flyers' Timonen out for second straight game

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen will be out of the lineup again due to a lower-body injury when the Flyers play at the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

Timonen was injured blocking a shot in the third period of the Flyers' game Jan. 30 against the Anaheim Ducks. He sat out Philadelphia's game Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Kings switch defensive pairs for Blackhawks

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Not much else has worked in generating offense for the Los Angeles Kings, so why not a change on the blue line?

It appears coach Darryl Sutter will tweak his defensive pairings when the Kings host the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday (10 p.m. ET, NHLN-CA) at Staples Center. Drew Doughty played with Willie Mitchell while Jake Muzzin was with Matt Greene in the morning skate.

"Drew's playing a lot of minutes and he needs a little bit more stability in his own zone from his partner," Sutter said.

Muzzin and Greene have played together earlier this season and in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, but it has been a while since Doughty has played with Mitchell.
