The Hamilton Bulldogs announced Wednesday they have released veteran defenseman Mike Commodore from his Professional Try-Out Contract with the team.

The 33-year-old has played for seven teams over 11 NHL seasons, including the 2011-12 campaign, which he split between the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 17 games with the Bulldogs, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, Commodore registered two assists and 26 penalty minutes. He was invited to Canadiens training camp last week, where he said his wish was to "Come here, move my feet, play well in the intersquad scrimmage and see where it goes."

The Philadelphia Flyers practiced Wednesday without top-line forward Scott Hartnell, who reportedly sustained a foot injury during Tuesday's 3-0 loss at the New Jersey Devils.

According to CSNPhilly.com, Hartnell took a shot off his left foot at 6:53 of the third period and was seen walking gingerly after the game.

If Hartnell, who tied for sixth in the League last season with 37 goals, is unavailable for Thursday's game against the New York Rangers, it could put a struggling team already in deeper trouble. Philadelphia has just three goals in three games and entered the season weakened by the offseason departures of James van Riemsdyk and Jaromir Jagr, as well as the wrist injury sidelining Danny Briere.

Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates told reporters Wednesday that goalie Michal Neuvirth will make his season debut Thursday when the Caps host the Montreal Canadiens.

Braden Holtby had started Washington's first two games, allowing 10 goals on 73 shots in a 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday and a 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

Neuvirth, 24, went 13-13-5 in 38 games last season, with a 2.82 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and three shutouts.

Multiple sources are reporting that St. Louis Blues defenseman Jeff Woywitka has been placed on waivers.

Woywitka, who broke into the NHL with the Blues during the 2005-06 season, hadn't skated in a game with the team this season. He played in 27 games for the New York Rangers last season.

The Detroit Red Wings lost another player to injury Tuesday in a loss to the Dallas Stars when defenseman Ian White sustained a severe cut above his knee.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told the media White could miss two to three weeks. This is the latest setback for a team that's already missing defensemen Jakub Kindl (groin), Jonathan Ericsson (hip) and Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder).

Holland signed free-agent defenseman Kent Huskins on Tuesday in an attempt to ease the losses on the back end. According to The Detroit News, Colaiacovo is expected to be out up to a month. Kindl should return Friday against the Minnesota Wild, and Ericsson is expected to return soon.

Additionally, the Red Wings expect forwards Todd Bertuzzi (flu) and Darren Helm (back) and goalie Jonas Gustavsson (groin) to return Friday against the Minnesota Wild.

The Dallas Stars' stay in Detroit lasted a bit longer than expected after a mechanical problem with the team's plane.

According to a press release sent out Wednesday morning by Stars coordinator of communications Greg Ramirez, "The problem occurred shortly after de-icing, as a valve for one of the engines malfunctioned. As a precaution, the decision was made not to fly out and the team stayed at a hotel near Detroit."

Ramirez stressed that everyone was safe, and the Stars later added via their official Twitter account that they will be flying home Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT. They won't practice Wednesday as originally planned. The Stars play host to the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

The Stars got a pair of Michael Ryder goals Tuesday night to pick up a 2-1 win over the Red Wings and improve to 2-1-0 on the season.

The Detroit Red Wings' beat-up blue line got more bad news Tuesday, as general manager Ken Holland announced Carlo Colaiacovo will miss 3-4 weeks with an injury to his left shoulder.

Colaiacovo was hurt midway through the third period of Monday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Wings already are missing blueliners Jonathan Ericsson (hip) and Jakub Kindl (groin). The Wings signed veteran free agent Kent Huskins to a one-year deal Tuesday morning, and had him in the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Dallas Stars.

According to a report from ESPN New York, Nino Niederreiter of the New York Islanders has requested a trade.

The fifth pick of the 2010 NHL Draft reportedly is unhappy with his current situation and feels he would be better served playing somewhere else.

"Any conversations I have regarding players, that remains confidential," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said.

The 20-year-old had one goal in 55 NHL games last season. In 39 games with Bridgeport of the American Hockey League this season, Niederreiter has 19 goals and 17 assists.

One interesting note to the game will be a brother-vs.-brother battle between the Stars' Reilly Smith and the Red Wings' Brendan Smith. They met three times in the AHL this season, with Brendan's Grand Rapids Griffins beating Reilly's Texas Stars twice.

"It will definitely be special," Reilly Smith told the Dallas Morning News. "The family is driving down for the game, so I'm really looking forward to it."

The Detroit Red Wings have signed free-agent defenseman Kent Huskins to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, ESPN.com is reporting the deal is for $750,000.

Huskins, 33, had two goals and five assists in 25 games with the St. Louis Blues last season, and played in one Stanley Cup Playoff game for them.

The Red Wings already were playing without injured defensemen Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl, and then lost blueliner Carlo Colaiacovo to an injured left shoulder in Monday's 3-2 shootout win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Coach Mike Babcock was asked after the game if Colaiacovo could be out weeks and said, "Yeah, it doesn't look like it's any time soon."

Originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round of the 1998 NHL Draft, Huskins has 67 points in 299 NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Blues. He was part of the Ducks' Stanley Cup championship team in 2007.
