The Edmonton Oilers announced goaltender Yann Danis has cleared waivers and been re-assigned to the club's American Hockey League team, the Oklahoma City Barons.

That move could mean veteran Nikolai Khabibulin is healthy enough to return to the lineup. Khabibulin has not played this season while continuing to work his way back from hip surgery in April.

Khabibulin, who turned 40 earlier this month, went 12-20-7 in 40 games last season, with 2.65 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.

If Khabibulin is activiated, it's likely he'll be the backup to Devan Dubnyk on Wednesday when the Oilers play at the Phoenix Coyotes.

The New York Rangers announced team captain Ryan Callahan will have an MRI on his shoulder Wednesday afternoon.

Callahan appeared to injure his left arm during a third-period fight with the Philadelphia Flyers' Maxime Talbot during Tuesday's game. During the scuffle the players were yanking on each other and fell to the ice. When they got up, Callahan held his left arm close to his body and immediately skated off the ice.

"We were holding each other up and his shoulder popped out or something," Talbot told NHL.com. "It was unfortunate. I let him go. I kind of felt it, but then I saw his face as well."

Callahan scored his second goal of the season in the second period, and it held up as the game-winner in the Rangers' 2-1 victory.

The Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday that goaltending prospect Eddie Lack will be out at least six months following hip surgery.

"After consultation with our team physicians, it was deemed that Eddie Lack would require a procedure on his hip," Mike Gillis said in a statement. "We expect Eddie to make a complete recovery and continue his professional career after a successful rehabilitation program."

Lack went 7-4-1 in 13 games this season with the Canucks' American Hockey League team, the Chicago Wolves, but hasn't played since Nov. 24.

Lack, 25, signed a new two-year contract with the organization during the offseason, and was expected to slide into the backup role behind Cory Schneider if a long-rumored trade involving Roberto Luongo ever happened.

Should the Canucks still deal Luongo, the only other goaltender currently under contract to the Canucks is Joe Cannata, a sixth-round pick in 2009 who began this season in the ECHL before joining the Wolves when Lack was hurt. The current starter for the Wolves is Matt Climie, who has split time with Lack in the AHL in 2011-12 and at the start of this campaign, but who is not currently signed to an NHL contract.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Tuesday that defenseman Matt Niskanen will miss 2-4 weeks with a lower-body injury.

Niskanen was injured during the first period of Sunday's game at the Ottawa Senators.

In five games, Niskanen has a goal and two assists.

The Dallas Stars have placed center Derek Roy on injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 24, due to a groin injury.

Roy has two assists in four games, but hasn't played since Jan. 24, when he sustained the injury. He'll miss his second game Monday when the Stars visit the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Roy was acquired in July from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy.

The Florida Panthers announced on their official Twitter feed that Jonathan Huberdeau will remain with the team for the remainder of the season.

The third pick of the 2011 NHL Draft, Huberdeau has a goal and two assists in four games. He had all his points on opening night and has been held off the score sheet since then. However, he's third on the team with 13 shots on goal and is averaging 15:49 of ice time per game.

Huberdeau had an outstanding preseason with the Panthers in September 2011, but the team sent him back to Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for another season of development. With another half-season of junior hockey plus a solid turn at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, the Panthers are reaping the reward for that decision.

"With Jonathan, the difference between an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old is huge," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen told the Miami Herald. "You see a difference in maturity, and he had that extra year to develop as a person and a player. He wasn't part of that important first step of us making the playoffs, but he's going to be with us for a long, long time."

The Panthers had before their sixth game, Tuesday at the Tampa Bay Lightning, to make a decision. Prior to Huberdeau playing in his sixth game, the team again could have sent him back to his junior team, delaying the start of his contract. Once he plays his sixth game, his contract officially stars. He still can be sent back to his junior team after that, but it would waste the first season of his deal.

Two-time Stanley Cup champion Petr Sykora has signed with Swiss club Bern for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

Sykora, 36, had 21 goals and 44 points in 82 games with the Devils last season, and five points in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

A 1995 first-round pick of the Devils, Sykora has 323 goals and 721 points in 1,017 games with the Devils, Anaheim Ducks, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild. He won Stanley Cups with the Devils in 2000 and Penguins in 2009.
