Kennedy took part in the morning skate at Nassau Coliseum but was not on the ice for pregame warmups, and the Penguins announced about 20 minutes before game time that Kennedy would not play due to an illness.
The Penguins are without star center Evgeni Malkin (upper body) and No. 1 defenseman Kris Letang (lower body). They bring a 10-game winning streak into the game.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will put their 10-game winning streak on the line Friday night against the New York Islanders, but they will again be without two stars.
Center Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang skated Friday morning, but coach Dan Bylsma told reporters at Nassau Coliseum that neither would suit up against the Islanders.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will be aiming for their 11th consecutive win on Friday night when they visit the New York Islanders at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Penguins will be looking to extend the one-point lead they hold over the Montreal Canadiens for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
Here are the projected lineups for the Penguins and Islanders on Friday:
Forward Zach Boychuk certainly has racked up plenty of frequent-flyer miles in this shortened season.
Boychuk on Thursday was claimed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes. It's the third time this season the 23-year-old has been claimed, this time going from the Nashville Predators to Carolina.
Boychuk was claimed by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 31 after being waived by the Hurricanes. He played in seven games for the Penguins before being acquired on waivers by the Predators on March 5.
He had one goal and two points in five games with the Predators, and has totaled two points and six penalty minutes in 13 NHL games this season with Carolina, Pittsburgh and Nashville.
It will be the third appearance for Poulin, who last played March 10 when he relieved Evgeni Nabokov for the third period of a game in Pittsburgh and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced.
In his only prior start this season, Poulin made 24 saves in a 4-2 home loss to Carolina.
The Edmonton Oilers aren't planning any lineup changes as they try to climb over the .500 mark and extend the San Jose Sharks' struggles when the teams meet Wednesday at Rexall Place.
"The closer you get to the end, the more important these games get," said Devan Dubnyk, who gets the start for the Oilers in goal. "Every game is an opportunity to catch somebody."
Here's how the lineups for the Oilers and Sharks could look:
The Ducks will be shooting for their 13th consecutive home victory and could climb to within three points of the Blackhawks in the Presidents' Trophy race if they win in regulation.
Hiller is 10-2-3 with a 2.53 goals-against average and .911 save percentage, and has been particularly hot of late. He's 4-0-1 in his past five starts, giving up a total of six goals and posting a .956 save percentage.
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday the team had recalled defenseman Jake Gardiner from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. He will be available for Wednesday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Gardiner had no points, a minus-1 rating and four shots on goal in two games with the Maple Leafs earlier this season. Last season he had 30 points in 75 games.
