Gamers, Wild players unite at inaugural Wild Gaming Tournament Finals

First-of-its-kind esports event took place Monday at Mall of America

by Phil Ervin @mnwild /

BLOOMINGTON -- Growing up in central Sweden, Victor Rask used to create his likeness in the video game NHL 1999 and dream of one day scoring goals just like the character on the screen in front of him.

Monday afternoon inside the Rotunda at Mall of America, the Wild center grabbed a controller and went back to his childhood -- only this time, he didn't have to custom-make his own name and number from scratch using the game's "create a player" feature. Rask scored three goals as his virtual "self" against one lucky Wild fan in a friendly game of EA Sports NHL 19, part of the pro-am portion of the first-ever Minnesota Wild Gaming Tournament Finals presented by Mall of America.

"It was a lot of fun," said Rask, who today is more of a Fortnite fan but was still able to best his opponent Monday. "I hadn't played this game in a long time, so I wasn't sure how good I was going to be."

Wild still believes playoff run possible despite tough stretch

Even with one win in nine games since the break, Minnesota remains inside the playoff bubble

by Dan Myers @MNWildScribe /

ST. PAUL -- In front of a nationally televised audience, in its home arena before a packed crowd, the Wild once again had one of its most frustrating games of the season.

It comes in the midst of a frustrating stretch of hockey, with Minnesota posting just one win in nine games since exiting the All-Star break.

On Sunday, the Wild's penalty kill allowed a pair of goals in the first period. It's power play 0-for-2. It never got on track 5-on-5. This after a maddening overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Friday in which the Wild lost a three-goal lead. Which came on the heels of a blown two-goal lead three nights earlier.

Wild lacks killer instinct in loss to Devils

Minnesota loses three-goal lead on Friday against New Jersey

by Dan Myers @MNWildScribe /

ST. PAUL -- Up three goals late in the second period on Friday, the Wild appeared to be destined for its second victory in eight games since the All-Star break.

With none of the other teams seriously battling for playoff positioning in the Western Conference in action on Friday, Minnesota looked primed to post a pair of crucial points with less than two dozen games remaining in the regular season.

But a goal by New Jersey's Will Butcher with less than two minutes remaining in the second zapped the momentum, and as the third period began, the wheels fell off for the Wild.

From the Rink: Wild hosts Devils as standings get even tighter

Minnesota with big opportunity to capture points on a quiet night in the Western Conference

by Dan Myers @MNWildScribe /

Good day from Xcel Energy Center, where the Wild will partake in a rare Friday home game tonight against the New Jersey Devils.

Just how rare have Friday games in St. Paul been? Tonight's contest is just the second one played all season and the first since the Wild played the Winnipeg Jets on Black Friday, a game the Wild won 4-2.

The game tonight will be the final Friday home game this season, so there's that. Minnesota will, however, play on the road several times over the course of the rest of the season. Next week, the team will be in Detroit.
