Wild Signs Matt Kassian

by Staff Writer / Minnesota Wild

Let the contract signing begin in the State of Hockey. The Minnesota Wild made its first offseason transaction on Monday afternoon, signing right wing Matt Kassian to a three-year entry level contract. Kassian was the Wild's second round pick (57th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Kassian's signing will begin the period for signing previously selected draft picks.

At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Kassian was best known for his bulk and bullying in the Western Hockey League, but he enjoyed his best WHL season last year with Kamloops. The Edmonton, Alberta native chipped in eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points as well as 162 penalty minutes in 72 games. All of those totals were career highs. He also played in four playoff games and registered one point. He has spent the previous four seasons playing in the WHL, including the last two full seasons with Kamloops.

The 20-year-old was named the Blazers Scholastic Player of the Year in 2007 after completing four university courses while maintaining a 3.7 grade point average.
