Matt Foy, who led the Houston Aeros in scoring last season, was one of four Aeros to re-sign with the Wild on Monday.
The Minnesota Wild reached agreements with four players on Monday, three of whom spent time with the Wild during the 2006-2007 season. Forwards Matt Foy, Aaron Voros and Joel Ward and defenseman Erik Reitz were all signed to one-year contracts. All four players finished the past season with the Houston Aeros, and all but Voros, who was acquired from New Jersey on March 1, played at least one game with the Wild.
Perhaps the best story was Ward, who arrived at the Wild's 2006 Training Camp as a tryout player, and performed well enough to earn his first professional contract. After getting sent to Houston just prior to the opening game of the regular season, Ward worked his way back to Minnesota and made his NHL debut on December 16 in Vancouver. Five games later, he notched his first NHL point with an assist in his hometown of Toronto. Ward played 11 NHL games, and 64 games with Houston. He finished the AHL season with 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists. He notched three shorthanded tallies.
Foy led the Aeros in scoring with 27 goals and 23 assists for 50 points in 62 games. Foy appeared in nine games with the Wild in 2006-2007 and did not register a point. The Oakville, Ontario native has been part of the Wild organization since the club drafted him in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He played 19 games during the 2005-06 season with Minnesota and notched two goals and three assists.
Reitz is another prospect that has been property of the Wild his entire professional career. The 6-foot-1, 210 pound defenseman is one of three players drafted by the Wild in 2000 and remains with the club. The other two are Marian Gaborik and Nick Schultz. The Detroit, Michigan native appeared in one game with Minnesota last season and did not register a point. He has played in six NHL games with Minnesota over the past two seasons. In 73 games with Houston, Reitz posted nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points to rank second among all Houston defenders.
Voros was acquired from the Devils on March 1 in exchange for a seventh round draft pick in 2008. In 58 AHL games the 6-foot-4, 200 pound winger finished the season with 11 goals and 11 assists to go along with 169 penalty minutes.
