Wild On The Road - Day 4

by Ryan Stanzel / Minnesota Wild

Between managing players, staff and equipment going on the road means a lot more than just visiting a different city for a few nights. As the Wild head west for four days on a two-game road trip to Los Angeles and Phoenix, we'll give you a behind-the-scenes look into all the happenings on the road. Make sure to check back in each day.

Day 3: Practice In Phoenix

Day 4: Game Day in Phoenix

10:20 a.m. - PR staff is at arena early to assure that Mike Yeo gets on KFAN with Paul Allen, live back in the Twin Cities. We also listen to the interview on iheartradio.

11:07 a.m. - As always, Niklas Backstrom is on the ice first for the morning skate. He’s followed out soon by Darcy Kuemper and goalie coach Bob Mason.

11:20 a.m. - The team’s optional practice is underway. They’re on a few minutes early. For the second time in as many road games, the home team skates at another location. It makes the morning go a little bit slower for the media. Marco Scandella is on the ice after missing yesterday’s practice.

11:33 a.m. - Niklas Backstrom is taking shots from the defense in morning skate - as he did to end practice yesterday - making it look like Nik will be in net tonight looking for his third straight win.

11:45 a.m. - The Wild locker room is open to the media - Mike Yeo will talk to the media after the players talk to the media. Jon Blum confirms he will make his Wild debut tonight, and WildTV gets him talking about it.

11:53 a.m. - Mike Yeo meets the media and confirms Backstrom is in net. He says he was impressed with Darcy Kuemper’s game in Los Angeles, and with back-to-back games this weekend, Kuemper should get another game soon.

11:55 a.m. - Yeo talks about the challenges of facing a goalie like Mike Smith - one that can play the puck as well as he can. He says not only is puck placement important - you can’t just dump the puck in behind the D and chase, because he’ll start the rush - but so is awareness on the forecheck.

12 p.m. - Team and media begins to vacate the arena for lunch. Typically on a road game, there’s a bus at 12:30 going back to the team hotel. Because the team hotel is within walking distance, players can walk back at their leisure.

4:45 p.m. - Most of the players have arrived at Arena to begin preparations for tonight.

9:35 p.m. - Justine Fontaine scores an empty netter for his first-career hat trick and first ever from a Wild rookie, icing the club's fourth-straight win, 4-1, over the Coyotes. Read more about the game in the Five Takeaways. WildTV catches the locker room celebration with The Fonz and the gang.

Friday, Jan. 14

8:30 p.m. - Team bus departs Glendale for Sky Harbor. Wild due back at MSP around 1:30 p.m.
