Wild Cuts Roster Down To 23

by Glen Andresen / Minnesota Wild

The preseason is done. The regular season starts a week from tomorrow. And the Minnesota Wild is set to get to work with its "final" roster to start the season.

Head Coach Mike Yeo made the final decisions following the Wild's 4-3 preseason loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Wild assigned defensemen Nate Prosser and Drew Bagnall as well as forward Casey Wellman to the Houston Aeros. The club also placed Matt Kassian, Mike Lundin and Cody Almond on injured reserve.

That leaves the active roster at 23 players, including 14 forwards and seven defensemen. Those names include surprise rookie Brett Bulmer, as well as Nick Johnson, who was picked up off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday morning.

The forwards will include Mikko Koivu, Dany Heatley, Devin Setoguchi, Guillaume Latendresse, Matt Cullen, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Darroll Powe, Kyle Brodziak, Cal Clutterbuck, Colton Gillies, Brad Staubitz, Eric Nystrom, Johnson and Bulmer.

Staubitz will miss the first three games due to a suspension, and the Wild will also await the fate of Nystrom, who was involved in a dangerous play in the Oiler game that resulted in an injury to Taylor Fedun. Nystrom could also face a suspension, despite the replays of the incident showing he was not intentionally going after Fedun.

The defensive corps currently stands at seven and includes Greg Zanon, Marek Zidlicky, Nick Schultz, Clayton Stoner, Jared Spurgeon, Marco Scandella and Falk.

Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding will be the goaltenders.
