“Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is a lifeline for those of us fighting hunger in Minnesota.  Thanks to their funding, we are able to obtain more than one million pounds of food each year for hungry Minnesotans, including over 800,000 pounds of fresh, nutritious produce.  Open Your Heart also supports vital summer funding to over 100 food shelves to meet the increased needs of families during the summer when school programs are limited or unavailable.”

-Colleen Moriarty, Executive Director, Hunger Solutions Minnesota

Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless, is a non-profit organization focused on meeting the needs of hungry and homeless people in Minnesota.  Open Your Heart was founded in 1986 and provides funding each year to food and shelter providers in the Twin Cites and throughout the state.  It has the unique ability to respond quickly to address the needs of food shelves, food banks and shelters when others can’t.  And it’s not always food that is needed - in some cases a shelter may have an immediate need for a new refrigerator or additional sleeping mats.  Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless can help.

Despite the efforts of generous givers and hardworking service providers, hunger and homelessness are increasing in Minnesota. Food shelves across the state have seen an increase of 50% or more and the need continues to rise.  Half of those seeking help at food shelves are children. The fastest growing group to use food shelves is the “working poor”, who sometimes work two or three jobs at minimum wage and still cannot support their families.

Each night, approximately 7,000 individuals receive shelter from a variety of homeless service providers across the state. On any given night in Minnesota, between 500 and 600 unaccompanied youth are without permanent shelter and over the course of one year, an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 Minnesota unaccompanied youth experience at least one episode of homelessness.

Research shows that homelessness and hunger affect school performance as well as physical and emotional health. Last year, Open Your Heart provided 49 grants to food and shelter providers and 62 educational grants to support housing agencies serving homeless children. Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is an organization built on hope, sustained by hard work and looking to the future.
