The essentials

DALLAS -- The Wild will return from an eight-day layoff on Friday when it plays the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center.
Minnesota rode into its All-Star break and bye week having won its final three games, and four of its last five, catapulting itself into third place all alone in the Central Division standings.
The Wild will get tested on Friday, however, as the Stars will be in search of their second victory of the week following a 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. League-wide, teams returning from their bye week against others who have already played a game have not fared well, but the Wild isn't using that as an excuse.
It doesn't have time.
Dallas' win over Buffalo pulled the Stars to within one point of the Wild in the standings.
"There's two words we gotta be thinking about right now and that's commitment and consistency," Boudreau said. "We had the commitment and consistency in the last two games when we played the same way. All year, it's been win three, lose two, win four out of five then lose four out of five.

ICYMI during the break

"If we can get the consistency and put an 8-2 together and then a 7-3 together, then all of the sudden, you're going into the playoffs as a hot team rather than a team where you don't know what you're getting."
The Wild is expected to get veteran reinforcements back in the form of Eric Fehr, who has missed the past three weeks of action with a lower-body injury sustained Jan. 7 in Montreal.
With Joel Eriksson Ek and Luke Kunin still back in Iowa following reassignment there last weekend, either Matt Hendricks or JT Brown will play next to Fehr and Marcus Foligno on the fourth line.
Just three points separate the third, fourth and fifth place teams in the Central Division, with the Wild currently holding the third spot with 55 points.
Dallas has 54 points with Colorado trailing at 52 points. All three teams have played 50 games.
The Stars have now won consecutive games going back to its final contest before the break, a 4-2 win over Winnipeg. Prior to that, Dallas had lost four-straight games and five of six overall.
The game Friday marks Dallas' final home game of six-straight played at American Airlines Center dating back to Jan. 12. When it plays in Nashville on Saturday, it will be the Stars' first road game in more than three full weeks.
On its current homestand, the Stars have posted a 1-4-0 record, including a 1-1 mark against divisional foes.
Jamie Benn scored Dallas' only goal on Wednesday, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead 8:39 into the game. Goaltender Ben Bishop made 30 saves to make that goal stand up.
Benn's goal was his team-leading 19th of the season and his 35 points are third-most on the club. Tyler Seguin has 18 goals and 27 assists for a team-high 45 points. Alexander Radulov also has 27 assists and 41 points.
Bishop has been outstanding when healthy, posting a 17-12-2 record to go with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.

On the road again

The Wild plays its first game following the NHL All-Star Weekend and its five-day break and completes a stretch of three straight road games Friday in Dallas.
Minnesota has won six of its last eight road games, highlighted by a four-game winning streak, Dec. 29 - Jan. 7, the longest road-winning streak of the season.
The Wild ranks T-1st in the NHL with six road wins and second with 12 road points since Dec. 29.
Zach Parise leads the Wild in road scoring with 25 points (12-13=25) this season. Mikael Granlund is second with 20 points (7-13=20), Eric Staal is third with 18 points (6-12=18) and Charlie Coyle is fourth with 14 points (4-10=14).

Back-to-back

Friday's contest begins Minnesota's ninth set of 15 back-to-backs this season. The Wild is 3-5-0 in the first night of back-to-backs and 5-3-0 in the second.

And down the stretch they come

Minnesota continues its Central Division play Friday, its second contest of three straight. The Wild sits third in the division at 55 points, one ahead of Dallas' 54 points.
The Wild is 4-1-1 in its last six games against a Central opponent, including three straight wins. Minnesota is 9-4-1 against Central opponents this season, ranking T-3rd in the NHL in wins.
