The opponent

The Avalanche lost to the Wild Saturday night in St. Paul, and will be going into the second of three games in three days. Goalie Jonathan Bernier took the loss on the road, stopping 22 of 24 shots. Colorado committed seven penalties, including a fighting major, as tensions ran high in a physical game. Collectively, the teams were assessed 15 minor penalties and two fighting majors. David Warsofsky led the Avalanche in ice time with just over 27 minutes, while Carl Soderberg set the standard with five shots on goal.

Fighting chance

Four players who aren't afraid to administer physicality will make the trip to Denver on Sunday. Roster regular Chris Stewart, prospect Kurtis Gabriel, camp invitee Ryan Malone and recent addition Marcus Foligno are all big, physical players. Following a few spirited bouts and big hits Saturday, and given coach Bruce Boudreau's preferred style of play, these types of grinders will be invaluable to the Wild lineup this season. However, with limited roster spots, they may need to show they can also chip in on the scoreboard.

First Look

Forward Joel Eriksson Ek appeared in 18 games -- including three playoff tilts -- last season while maturing both physically and mentally during Swedish Elite League play. This season, he hopes to crack the NHL roster for good.

Sunday marks the 20-year-old's 2017 preseason debut.
