Wild defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist became the first Wild player to ever win an Olympic gold medal on Sunday, after Sweden handed Finland its first loss of the Olympic Games. Niklas Lidstrom broke a 2-2 tie with a third period goal to send Sweden to the 3-2 victory in the gold medal final.It was the first gold medal for Team Sweden since 1994.
Wild rookie Mikko Koivu and Team Finland earned a silver medal after finishing the tournament with an overall record of 7-1-0.
Tjarnqvist, who posted two shots on goal in the final, finished the tournament with three points on two goals and an assist. Koivu was held without a point on the tournament.
Both players are expected to join their Wild teammates in time for the Wild’s next game on Tuesday night at Colorado.
