Post Practice Update
Four hours after training camp began, the final media interviews are done, and we're getting ready for day two. Indeed, team White beat Green 2-1 in the scrimmage.
Todd Richards spoke to the media after the second team's practice. He mentioned that he wanted more intensity out of some guys. But he'll reserve judgement until he sees tomorrow's practice, based on ice conditions and it being the first day. Richards worked mostly with his team on the forecheck and entry today. One thing you'll notice differently is that Richards wants his team to enter the offensive zone in the middle. He feels it will help open up the rest of the ice and make the defensemen commit.
It was a good day all around. Carly the Intern handled her first day of training camp well, and I even was nice enough to rescue her from a locked stairwell.
We'll talk to everyone Monday. Don't forget, open scrimmage again! Doors open at 11 a.m.
Scrimmage, Period 2
I've moved up to the concourse to get some more juice on the laptop. From my perch I can see that it will be Anton Khudobin playing in net for Green, and Wade Dubielewicz in White.
We're back underway.
Derek Boogaard and John Scott on opposite teams and on ice at the same time. That's a lot of...bigness.
Dubielewicz a point blank stop on Peter Zingoni of Team Green.
Kalus continues hit hard-hitting ways, sending Nick Schultz into the boards.
Martin Havlat nearly gets his second assist, but Khudobin makes a flying save on Stoner's 3-on-2 rebound attempt off a Havlat shot from the left circle.
Colton Gillies, positioned right in front of the net, slaps a rebound from a Nathan Smith shot just wide.
Tyler Cuma, the Wild's first-round pick in 2008 who missed most of last season with a knee injury, just looks calm, cool and collected like he did in camp last season. Nice play there pushing a centering feed out into the neutral zone.
Owen Nolan with a nifty toedrag move, but Dubielewicz makes the save. The Nolan, Benoit Pouliot and James Sheppard line has looked good thus far. Nine minutes left in the scrimmage.
And we're tied up! Colton Gillies makes it 1-1.
White is back on top with 5:30 left, as Havlat, Koivu and Brunette line scores for the second time. Green saying the net was off the moorings. Replay not available. It's 2-1 Green. I've got to head downstairs, I'll be back after the Group B practice to wrap up Day 1 of Training Camp.
Scrimmage, Period 1
It will be Josh Harding in white and Niklas Backstrom in green. We're just about underway.
For green it's Bouchard between Miettinen and Clutterbuck to start. The Havlat/Brunette/Koivu line started for white. Pouliot/Sheppard/Nolan up next for green. We've already seen the white lines, in the first practice.
Nice save by Josh Harding
on a turnaround shot by Petr Kalus.
We have our first big hit, as Matt Kassian
collides with 2009 draftee Kris Foucault.Pierre-Marc Bouchard
, playing center, hits Jaime Sifers cutting backdoor, but Harding made the save. Linemate Antti Miettinen slides a shot just wide.
Burns paired with Greg Zanon. Nice mix of offense and shut-down D.
Kalus nailed Nick Schultz into the glass - fortunately, it didn't break.
Not a ton of scoring chances yet. Some good hitting and "pace" as Todd Richards likes to call it, however.
Pouliot almost scores the first goal, but Harding stays with the deflection of a point shot by Big John Scott.
Tripping call to Jaime Sifers, although it kind of looked like MIkko Koivu
fell on his own after he lost an edge.
Breakaway for Green's Peter Zingoni, an AHL contracted forward here on a tryout. He shoots high and wide.
Team White's best chance, as Kim Johnsson rings a shot off the post on a back-door cut.
Petr Kalus, back from a season in Russia, lays a heavy hit on Clayton Stoner
. Seven minutes left in the first of two periods, and no score.
I'm about to go to the restroom, so that's a sure sign a goal will be scored.
Koivu indeed scored (while I was grabbing a power bar out of the locker room) for a 1-0 lead for Team White after the first period.
11:25 a.m., Sunday
We'll keep the newest info up top.
Quick recap of last night's team dinner, at Headwaters on the club level. Todd Richards and Chuck Fletcher both addressed the group. Dinner consisted of steak, chicken, fish, pasta, gnocchi, and a great dessert bar including of course cookie pudding. First in line for seconds? Big John Scott.
Everyone was on their best behavior - i.e., no shoecheck. A shoecheck is when someone sneaks under the table and puts ketchup on somebody's shoe. It happened to me once in Vancouver. Never found out who it was, but I think it was Stephane Veilleux. I had just gotten a shoeshine, too.
Teams warming up for the scrimmage. Brent Burns back on the ice in a Wild sweater for the first time since March. Benoit Pouliot sporting a very nice beard.
I would like to thank the NFL for scheduling the Giants' opener at 3:15 today so I can get home and watch.
It looks like Troy Ward will coach Team A (in white), while Aeros assistant coach Mark LeRose will coach Team B (in green).
10:45 a.m., Sunday
It's official - the 2009 Training Camp is underway. Group A hit the ice about 10:35 a.m. - a few minutes late because arena officials were tending to a broken pane of glass behind one of the nets. Rumor has it Petr Kalus was the culprit.
Dozens of fans are lined up waiting for doors to open at 11 a.m. for today's open scrimmage.
Team A is as follows today: Belanger, Boogaard, Brodziak, Brunette, Brust, Buck, DiSalvatore, Dubielewicz, Earl, Falk, Harding, Havlat, Hilbert, Hnidy, Johnsson, Kassian, Koivu, Krupp, Madsen, McMillan, Milroy, Noreau, Scandella, Schultz, Stoner, Weller, Zidlicky.
Team B is: Backstrom, Bouchard, Burns, Clutterbuck, Cuma, Foucault, Fraser, Gillies, Hackett, Irmen, Johnson, Kalus, Kaufman, Khudobin, Kuemper, Lannon, Miteeinen, Nolan, Pouliot, Rogers, Scott, Sheppard, Sifers, Smith, Testwuide, Zanon and Zingoni.
Just heard a loud thud behind Dubielewicz. Carson McMillan went hard into the boards but is skating onto the bench under his own power. He's being helped by new Wild assistant athletic trainer John Worley.
Team A will practice for approximately 45 minutes, then scrimmage for an hour against Team B. Then, it's Team B's turn to practice on the ice while Team A works out off the ice.
Aeros assistant coach Troy Ward is on the ice helping out this morning. All of the Wild's hockey operations staff is in the stands. Todd Richards and his coaching staff will watch the scrimmage from the stands, while scouts will coach the scrimmage.
Andrew Brunette streaks up the left wing as only Bruno can. He looks pretty good in his first full practice after off-season knee surgery.
Martin Havlat, in his first practice with the Wild, sidesteps Kim Johnsson, dekes Dubielewicz to the ground and lifts a backhander that hits the crossbar.
Gates are open to the public for today's Wild scrimmage!
We have seen our first line combo of the 09-10 season, and it is Brunette-Koivu-Havlat. No one in the Northwest Division is excited to see those three together. Belanger is centering Brodziak and Hilbert. DiSalvatore is between Boogaard and Weller.
Kyle Brozdiak with the niftiest early goal, snapping a quick shot by Josh Harding
. Andy Hilbert, NHL vet in camp on a tryout, taking faceoffs across from Mikko Koivu
The Wild is working on clearing its own zone. Youngster Justin Falk
paired with Shane "The Sheriff" Hnidy.
Practice for Group A is done, they will resurface and come back out for the scrimmage.
The stands are filling up nicely for the scrimmage. Among those in attendance are Jamie MacDonald, formerly of Wild.com and the mastermind of the R.S.S. Feed, and his lovely bride Patty.
Clutterbuck, Gillies and Backstrom all of Group B are on the bench anxiously awaiting the resurfacing to end.
