LW Matt Cooke played in his 1,000th NHL game and LW Zach Parise skated in his 600th contest but LW Taylor Hall scored the shootout winner to help Edmonton earn a 4-3 shootout victory Tuesday night at Xcel Energy Center in front of a crowd of 18,650 fans – the 500th sellout in team history (including preseason and playoffs). Parise, RW Jason Pominville and D Jared Spurgeon scored for the Wild in regulation, while Parise and C Mikko Koivu scored shootout goals. G Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves through overtime, stopping one shootout attempt. Next up, Minnesota continues its homestand against the New York Rangers on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT on FOX Sports North and KFAN 100.3 FM.
Through 65 games, Minnesota has 77 points, one shy of the franchise record of the 78 points it earned in 2006-07 (36-23-6). The Wild moved to 23-5-1 against the Oilers since Feb. 13, 2004.
The Wild moved to 14-5-5 in 2014, having earned points in 13 of its last 16 games (9-3-4). Minnesota has earned points in eight consecutive contests at Xcel Energy Center (6-0-2) and is 22-7-4 at Xcel Energy Center this season.
LW Matt Cooke skated in his 1,000th NHL game, becoming the 286th skater and 288th player in NHL history to hit the milestone and third this season (Robyn Regehr and Martin St. Louis). He also becomes the fourth player to reach the milestone in a Wild sweater, joining Keith Carney (2/24/08), Andrew Brunette (2/1/11) and Matt Cullen (1/10/12).
LW Zach Parise skated in his 600th NHL career game and used a goal and assist to earn his ninth multi-point game of the season, tied for most on the Wild, and 113th of his career. He netted his 12th power-play goal, ranking third in the NHL this season. He has 15 points (7-8=15) in his last 11 games and ranks second on the team with 42 points (22-20=42) in 50 games this season. He has totaled 490 points (234-256=490) in nine seasons with New Jersey and Minnesota.
RW Jason Pominville earned his ninth multi-point game of the season, tied for most on the Wild, and 123rd of his career with a goal and an assist. He stretched his team lead to 45 points (24-21=45) and now has 12 points (6-6=12) in his last 13 games. His 24 goals also lead the Wild.
C Mikael Granlund recorded his seventh multi-point game of the season and his career with two assists. He has 14 points (3-11=14) in the last 13 games and has 34 points (6-28=34) in 52 games this season.
D Ryan Suter led all skaters playing 34:12 TOI – his sixth game topping the 34 minutes this season and his career, and his 33rd game hitting the 30:00-mark this season.
D Jared Spurgeon netted his third goal of the season. He has six points (2-4=6) in his last eight games and sits at 18 points (3-15=18) in 51 games this season.
LW Dany Heatley tallied an assist on Spurgeon’s goal. He owns 27 points (12-15=27) in 27 career contests against Edmonton and has 26 points (12-14=26) in 65 games this season.
G Darcy Kuemper made his 19th start of the season, making 23 saves through overtime and allowing the first shootout goals of his career, stopping 1-of-4 Oilers attempts.
C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, LW David Perron and RW Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton in regulation, while G Viktor Fasth made 28 saves through overtime and made two shootout saves in his Oilers debut.
