Detroit scored two power-play goals to lead the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Wild Saturday afternoon at Xcel Energy Center in front of a sellout crowd of 19,176 fans. C Mikko Koivu and C Charlie Coyle scored for Minnesota, while G Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves. Next up, the Wild completes its home-and-home series against the Red Wings in Detroit tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC Sports Network and KFAN 100.3 FM.
Minnesota saw its point streak of 10 straight games on home ice come to an end (7-1-3). It was also just the second time in 11 games the Wild failed to earn a point against the Red Wings in Saint Paul (4-2-5). Minnesota moved 23-8-5 at Xcel Energy Center this season.
C Charlie Coyle scored on his first career penalty shot attempt, tying the game in the third period. It was the Wild’s first penalty shot attempt this season and Minnesota’s first penalty shot goal at Xcel Energy Center since Matt Cullen on Dec. 31, 2011 vs. Phoenix. The Wild moved to 16-of-29 (55.2%) all-time on penalty shot attempts.
C Mikko Koivu netted the game’s opening goal with his second power-play goal of the season. He also won 11-of-18 faceoffs (61.1%) in the game. He has 14 points (2-12=14) in his last 15 games and is T-1st on Minnesota in assists this season, totaling 41 points (9-32=41) in 54 games.
D Ryan Suter tallied the primary assist on Koivu’s goal and now shares the Wild lead in assists. His 32 helpers this season ranks T-11th among NHL defensemen while his 39 points in 70 games this season (7-32=39) ranks T-15th.
LW Matt Moulson earned the secondary assist on Koivu’s goal. He has six points (3-3=6) in nine games with Minnesota and 14 points (5-9=14) in his last 15 games and 44 points (20-24=44) in 64 games this season.
Today’s game was the first since March 8 that a member of the Pominville, Parise and Granlund line did not tally a point, and just the second contest they were held without a point since Feb. 4.
RW Jason Pominville saw his seven-game point streak (4-4=8) come to an end. It’s tied with Suter’s assist streak (7, Dec. 11-23) for longest point streak by a Wild player this season. It was Pominville’s longest point streak since an eight-game stretch with the Sabres March 17-April 3, 2009 (3-10=13).
G Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves in his second career start against Detroit. It was his 23rd start, moving to 12-6-4 this season, including 7-2-2 in Saint Paul. He earned his first NHL victory against the Red Wings last season stopping 29-of-31 shots (2/17/13).
D Brendan Smith, C David Legwand and RW Gustav Nyquist each scored for Detroit, while G Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for the Red Wings.
