SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The Xcel Energy/Minnesota Wild Play Our Game Equipment Grant Program today awarded starter hockey equipment sets to the following seven youth hockey associations in Minnesota: Bagley Youth Hockey Association, City of Lakes (NE Minneapolis) Youth Hockey Association, Hopkins Youth Hockey Association, Owatonna Youth Hockey Association, Osseo Youth Hockey Association, Proctor Youth Hockey Association and Sartell Youth Hockey Association. A total of 124 hockey sets will be donated amongst these hockey associations as an incentive to attract new participants to their program.
“The initial purchase of equipment can be an obstacle to getting a child to try hockey,” said Mike Snee, Executive Director of Minnesota Hockey. “The generosity of Xcel Energy and the Minnesota Wild allows community hockey associations to provide equipment for those who want to try the game. Once children try hockey we believe they will love it because of the fun, speed and excitement of the game.”
“We remain proud and excited to partner with Minnesota Hockey and the Play Our Game Program,” said Brad Bombardir, Director of Community Partnerships for the Minnesota Wild. “With this program, we continue to strive towards the goal of providing every boy and girl an opportunity to participate in the great tradition of hockey in Minnesota.”
The Xcel Energy/Minnesota Wild Play Our Game Equipment Grant Program grantees were selected from a large pool of applications from local hockey associations across the state. A three-member panel determined the awardees. Over $100,000 in equipment has been donated to local hockey associations across Minnesota in the nine years of the program’s existence.
There are over 60,000 players, coaches and officials registered with Minnesota Hockey, the governing body of youth hockey in Minnesota and a USA Hockey affiliate.
